Keynote: Building Open Source Communities (Without The Pain) - Jono Bacon, Leading Community and Collaboration Strategy Consultant, Author & Speaker
There is a growing trend in companies seeing the value of building open source communities for their customers and users. Hashicorp, Microsoft, GitLab, Samsung, and many more have driven enormous success with their open source communities.

Doing this well is tricky though. How do you know where to start, what goals you should start with, and how to track your success?

Watch as Jono Bacon community strategy consultant and author of 'People Powered', shares how to cohesively manage your community projects through strategic planning, and share practical recommendations that you can put into practice right away. This keynote will leave you with four key takeaways:

* Understanding a framework for how to deploy a community strategy, invest in the right areas, track progress, and build in accountability.
* How to identify relevant KPIs, building in a regular cadence for reviews and skills development.
* How to build cross-functional support from management, other teams, and how to hire the right people to deliver this work well.
* How to avoid the common pitfalls and road bumps many companies face in this journey.

Keynote: Parts are Parts – the Joining of Mainframe, Distributed and Cloud Native Continuous Delivery - Tracy Ragan, CEO and Co-Founder / DeployHub & Continuous Delivery Foundation Board Member
For enterprise organizations, most software development involves a hybrid of mainframe, cloud native and distributed systems coding. Even so the automation steps of the software development lifecycle are often siloed using manual coordination for delivery. Many will agree that the time has come to stop segregating software components based on their runtime platforms. The practice of continuous delivery should be focused on coordinating moving parts. To get there we need to shift our thinking to:

· understand that the different parts of a system are all similar, each having their own unique requirements for testing and delivery.
· acknowledge that mainframe lifecycle management has embraced and succeeded in DevOps practices, and can coordinate with distributed system CD tooling.
· define a CD practice with all parts in mind but a focus on coordination and tracking.

In this keynote we will explore how to re-think a hybrid approach to CD, based on individual components.

Keynote: Walking the Open Source Trail Towards Supply Chain Integrity and Security - Steve Winslow, VP of Compliance & Legal, The Linux Foundation
When a company first starts using open source software and engaging with communities by contributing back, the benefits quickly become clear. But over time, when continuing along the trail of open source use and collaboration, challenges can emerge. The same scale and velocity that power the benefits of open source can lead organizations to feel unsure about how best to manage supply chain security and risk considerations.

Fortunately, no one is alone in tackling these challenges. The same collaboration that drives open source software development is also driving communities to create real solutions to supply chain security and integrity concerns. In this talk, Steve will discuss several of the ways that organizations have been openly building tools and practices together to secure the software supply chain and create a path forward for all of us.

Panel Discussion: Making Our Strong Community Stronger - Dr. Gloria Chance, Mousai Group; Jeanne Glass, VirtualZ Computing; David Jeffries, IBM; Greg Lotko, Broadcom; Andy Youniss, Rocket Software
As a female founder of a mainframe software company, VirtualZ Computing Founder and CEO Jeanne Glass has always been dedicated increasing diversity within the tech sector. Through this mission, she brought several mainframe ecosystem partners together including Broadcom Mainframe Software, IBM, Rocket Software, TechChannel and Open Mainframe Project to accelerate diversity, equity, and inclusion across the technology industry.

To date, the Making Our Strong Community, Stronger collaborative initiative has coordinated three events, all of which were produced and moderated by Dr. Gloria Chance, the CEO of the Mousai Group. These events have put a spotlight on DEI from an executive perspective as well as personal experiences and how they shape corporate inclusion or the ability to bring your “whole self” is a privilege—and plays out differently for different people.

In this session, the four executives from the original kickoff webinar (Jeanne Glass of VirtualZ Computing; David Jeffries of IBM; Greg Lotko of Broadcom; Andy Youniss of Rocket Software) and Dr. Chance will come together to discuss the larger goals associated with the initiative, why it’s important and what’s to come.

Avoid Installing Open Source Malware in Your Enterprise - Joe Bostian, IBM
Common open source software repositories of all kinds have been under attack with increasing frequency over the last year by bad actors looking to inject malware into the enterprise. This poses a real threat to open source adoption in mainframe environments. These threats can be mitigated to balance security needs with the functional advantages that open source software provides. However, this requires the open source community to evolve some of their common habits, and follow some key best practices. Much of the necessary supporting infrastructure already exists, and this session will explore how to best leverage it to maintain a secure enterprise.

So you want to provide an API to access mainframe services or data, but are curious about the design approach that best fits your needs and which patterns can help you satisfy security and performance requirements? This session will touch on architecting your solution using Zowe API Mediation Layer (APIML) for Single Sign-On, API federation, and rapid application development while examining how to select the right API paradigm for your needs. From using REST to model and manage domain resources to using GraphQL to dynamically query for exactly the data a client application needs, join Broadcom's John Jakacki and John Mathunny in exploring some of the design constraints and useful patterns that avoid tight coupling to single use cases and the maintenance cost of ad-hoc designs.

Panel Discussion: For the Community, By the Community: The Evolution of Education for the Modern Mainframe Industry - Viviane Sanches, kyndryl; Darren Surch, Interskill; Robert Dahlberg, VCU; Hartanto Ario Widjaya, Singapore; Philip Gineo, Endevor
Technology moves at the speed of innovation and the importance of timely, diverse, accessible education is increasingly critical. In the Mainframe Community, education needs to continue to evolve with the continued modernization on the z/OS platform combined with the ebb and flow of a changing workforce. The Mainframe Open Education (MOE) Project will address the industry pain point by providing a platform for social learning, education created for the community by the community. MOE is bringing together members of the diverse Mainframe community to learn from each other through observation, collaboration, and interaction. Join us to hear more about this movement from the perspective and experience of various community members, including interns, partners, and subject matter experts.

Introducing ZEBRA - an Incubation Project for ZOWE - Salisu Ali, Bayero University Kano, Nigeria; Andrew Twydell, IBM Intern 2020-2021; Yongkook (Alex) Kim, Vicom Infinity
ZEBRA(Zowe Embedded Browser for RMF/SMF and APIs) is an incubator project of the Linux Foundation's Open Mainframe ZOWE Project. ZEBRA intends to provide re-usable and industry compliant JSON formatted RMF/SMF data records, so that other ISV SW and users can exploit them or use them with other Open-Source SW. ZEBRA can serve applications using JSON formatted RMF data thru ZOWE managed APIs to share and re-use them. ZEBRA helps system programmers and capacity/performance analyzers use available open-source utilities and creates a new knowledge base that can be shared among IBM Z performance SMEs and users. During this session we will present what ZEBRA comprises, demonstrate its newly developed built-in application for ZOWE desktop, and provide use cases and examples.

USS, Linux on Z or zCX: Where, oh Where to Run Open Source - Tatiana Balaburkina & Vladimir Kudryakov, Rocket Software
Simply saying "I am running open source on mainframe" (or "...on Z") does not fully explain the platform you are using because the mainframe has several OSes - and all of them are valuable to the DevOps Value Stream. But, the vast majority of open-source applications on the mainframe are on Unix operating systems and the mainframe supports three flavors: z/OS USS, Linux on Z and zCX. The variety of tools available on each OS differ due to the different complexities of adapting software to each operating system. In this session, the Rocket open-source porting team will take you through the advantages and disadvantages of working on z/OS USS and deep dive on how running open-source ported tools natively on z/OS USS can be used in DevOps pipelines.
